Joy to the World - Body Done!

When last we met on this project I had finished both triangles and had 84.7 grams total of the mini skeins left.  I also had 88.9 grams of the teal.  I weighed one of the triangles and determined that it took 91 grams total.  So I knew that I did not have enough yarn to make two more triangles, but I had plenty to make one.  So I started a third triangle using the mini skeins, working them in reverse order, starting with 10.  I switched skeins only at the beginning of a right side row to keep things looking neat.  Then when I ran out of the mini skeins I finished off the triangle with the teal and then joined them using a three-needle bind off.  Now I need to do the finishing work, which will all be done in the teal.  I’m thinking of working an I-cord edge along the top, just to create a neat edge, and then working a knit on lace edge on the rest of the edges.

Beaded Earrings

The next project was these earrings.  It did take me two tries to get the tension the way I liked it, and I ran out of one of the beads, but a quick email to Potomac Beads and they sent me more right away, no charge. The earrings are on one of my cool beading boards that I bought at the last Bead & Button show that I went to in 2018.  There are no more Bead & Button shows.  They cancelled the one in 2020, and the magazine stopped publishing in October of that year.  So now I will have to get my bead fix some other way.  Of course I have lots of beads already, and a number of kits that I need to make up.

Holiday Earrings & Bracelet

I have also been doing some beading.  I ordered a bead Advent Calendar from Potomac Beads and these were the first two projects.  There were some beaded dangles I could have made for the bracelet but they didn’t hang well from the chain so I decided not to do them.  The biggest challenge with the bracelet was just getting everything attached and evenly distributed.  I do like symmetry.

Science Experiment - Finished!

While I was letting my subconscious mind work on the question of what to do next on my Joy to the World project I focused on finishing up my Science Experiment shawl, completing it on December 16.  After finishing up 3 repeats of pattern B I switched to pattern C and worked the rest of the shawl in that pattern.  I didn’t quite work 6 repeats of pattern C, finishing on row 12.  When I bound off all the stitches I had about 1 foot left of color 25.  I love it when I use up all of my yarn, and win at yarn chicken.

Blocking took me a bit longer than I thought it would. And used up most of my blockers.  I ended up blocking the lace edge straight.  It just seemed to want to do that.  I absolutely love the gradiance of this set.  It is just so perfect, and goes so perfectly with the theme of the set - the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram for categorizing stars.

Joy to the World - Two Triangles Done!

One of these days I will learn to actually read the directions all the way through.  I sort of read them, and then I didn’t go back and look at them when I started knitting, so instead of decreasing the number of rows that I knit with each of the mini skeins I knit the same number of rows - 10.  And then wondered how that was going to work for making 5 more triangles.  Of course it wasn’t going to work.  I realized my mistake as I was knitting the last couple of mini skeins, but at that point I decided that I was committed and did not want to rip back or change what I was doing, so I just went with it.  I do like the size of my triangle.  The original pattern was more of a long scarf, which I’m just not that in to.  I did manage to get a second matching triangle out of the yarn.  Here are the weights of the mini-skeins after knitting the second triangle:

1 - 15 g
2 - 13.8 g
3 - 12.4 g
4 - 10.8 g
5 - 9.7 g
6 - 6.9 g
7 - 6.2 g
8 - 4.9 g
9 - 3.4 g
10 - 1.5 g

Just made it.  Now I have to decide what to do next.

Duha - Finished!

I actually finished this up almost a month ago, on November 28, over the Thanksgiving week holiday (I took the entire week off from work), then I almost forgot to post a picture in the forum thread in time for the final drawing.

Duha - Section One Done

The deadline to finish section one (rows 1-22) was November 18, and I finished it up with a couple of days to spare.  The pattern is pretty boring, really, but it is good practice.  The difference in yarn usage between the solid stitch sections and the lacy sections is pretty dramatic.  The solid stitch sections are pretty slow, the lace sections go pretty quickly.  I am almost done with section two (rows 23-43).

Duha - Cast On!

Is it casting on when it is crochet?  I have no idea.  This is the Expression Fiber Arts 21 Day Crochet Along challenge.  It started yesterday and I started it yesterday afternoon by chaining 301 stitches.  Yikes!  Then I figured out how to single crochet into that chain, and now I’m making pretty good progress.  The shape of the pattern is similar to Duga, as is the colorway that I chose - the Stormy Rainbow Hues set.
This is the first time that I am crocheting a shawl.  So far I am enjoying it.

Joy to the World - Seven colors done

This was the fourth project that I brought with me to Florida and this one did get worked on.  I have just attached color 8.  I’m not sure if I will make all of the triangles the same, or play around with colors and maybe reverse the order.  I even considered switching the knitting on the triangles to decreasing rather than increasing by casting on stitches for the next triangle when I finish this one.  I still haven’t decided what I’m going to do.  I think the key is to just have fun.  I did take the advice of the designer and cake up all of the yarn and put them in plastic zip-lock bags with the color number written on the bag so I can keep them straight.

Birthday Bliss - Day 16, Color 10

This was another of the four projects that I took with me to Florida, although this one did not get worked on while I was down there.  All of this progress represents knitting done prior to the trip.  When I finished chart 7, the pattern instructions were to work the charts in reverse order until chart 1 and then work back up through them until you finish all of the different balls of yarn.  I decided to make my shawl symmetrical by working back through the charts until day 10, work the same chart with Day 11, then work back up to chart 7 and then work back through them to chart 1.  Because I am working extra rows to use up my yarn this is going to end up being a long scarf/shawl.

Science Experiment - Up to Skein 6

I have been making some progress on this shawl as well.  It was one of the projects that I took with me to Florida, although I did not work on it while I was there.  I have now done three repeats of the Option B pattern and have almost used up Skein 6.  I guess I better get this finished before my 2021 Mad Scientist Advent Calendar arrives.  I received a shipping notice yesterday.  I just need to decide if I want to do another repeat of the B pattern or if I want to switch to the C pattern.

Duga - Finished!

We went down to St. Augustine Florida from 25 October to 4 November and I took this project with me (along with three others).  We drove down in my Element, and then took the Auto Train back.  It has been a long time since we’ve done any traveling and I think we were both pretty stuck in our rut.  I’m not sure either one of us was super keen on going, but we went and we thoroughly enjoyed it.  We stayed at Bruce’s Mom’s house.  She is an assisted living facility in St. Augustine.  His son was there for the first five days with his family (wife, two little ones and a grandpa).  The house was a little crowded, but not bad, and we enjoyed spending time with the little ones.  We went to the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, which was a lot of fun.  The next week Bruce and I went back and did the zip-line and obstacle course above the alligator farm - called Crocodile Crossing.  It was a blast.

I did a lot of knitting on this during the drive down.  The top picture is of Section 3.  I finished it on October 28.  I finished Section 4 - the complete shawl on October 30.  Here is Section 4 before blocking.
And here is Section 4 blocking.  I just soaked it and then laid it out.  I did not bother pinning anything.
And here is a picture after it came off the mats.  My beauty shot.
I only used about half of the yarn.  I’m thinking of making a second one to use the yarn up, but using a needle one size smaller and changing the order of the colors to get more contrast.

Duga - Cast On and Sections 1 and 2 Done

On October 15th, the Expression Fiber Arts Group on Ravelry kicked off a fun knit along for a very simple pattern called Duga.  It is just garter stitch and German Short Rows and is composed of wedges of color.  I picked up the pattern, which was free at the time, as well as a yarn set (Luster Sport in Kaleidoscopic Hues).  I was a bit concerned about the needle size called for in the pattern - US 7 (4.5 mm) - as the yarn appeared to be more fingering weight than sport weight, but I swatched with smaller needles as well as the ones called for and decided I like the fabric with the larger needles.  I did a long tail cast-on and placed markers every fifty stitches.
It is a super simple pattern and great for knitting and reading or for watching TV when you actually need to pay attention.  The knit along has the pattern broken up into 4 sections, with a drawing for completing each section by the deadline for that section.  The picture above is section 1 - composed of the first two colors.
Here is section 2, with the next two colors.  Now I need to go wind the next skein so I can start knitting section 3.

Science Experiment - Up to Skein 3

Once I finished up my Stellar Fade I was able to get back to working on my Science Experiment Shawl, which is the pattern that came with the Advent kit.  I will just use up each skein and join the next.  So far I’ve finished up the first two skeins and am working on the third.  I did 3 repeats of the first lace pattern and have just switched to the second lace pattern.  This Advent Set also came with needles.  Very nice needles.

Birthday Bliss - Cast On

Last year Jimmy Beans Wool came out with Birthday Boxes.  They are sort of like an advent calendar but they have 31 days and they are for your birthday.  I ordered one right away and when it came I stood it in an out of the way spot to await my birthday month.  Last weekend I finally started it, ten days late.  I have to admit that I really love these sorts of set ups.  Everything that I need is right there, the knitting needles, the code for the pattern, the yarn already caked up and ready to go.  And I like opening the drawers.  This is a pretty nice box too.

The yarn is one that I don’t think I’ve used before - madelinetosh Euro Sock.  It has a great feel and is really nice to work with.  I am working extra rows with each color to use up as much of the yarn as possible.  I have been consistently working 36 rows instead of 26.  I just restart the chart at the appropriate spot when I get to the end.  Here are the colors so far:

Stellar Fade: Finished!

After finishing up the Omega Shawl I pulled this one out again.  I had been working through the two crescents, using about 5 grams on each side.  I had made a fair bit of progress on both of them when I realized that there were some important differences between them.  I had been working both to the clues 1-3 instructions.  I figured this out when I went back and was looking at the blog posts for my first Lunar Fade shawl so I ripped the second crescent back, winding and I ripped using my ball winder.  Then I put the instructions for both crescents into a spreadsheet, with the instructions side by side, matched up by row, so I could make sure that I got the placement on the purl stitch ridges correct, and use the increase placement and the eyelets from clues 4-6.  It went much faster the second time through.  I used the full sized skein that came with the kit to work the I-cord edging on the crescents.

The wing tips carried on the color progression and the 5 gram amount, ending with skein7.  When I got to the two joining pieces - the triangle and the diamond I knew that I wanted to use about the same amount of each color, progressing from skein 7 to skein 1.  I created a stitch count spreadsheet for those sections so I could get the transition points right.  I ended up using only about 5 grams total of each of those colors.  I thought about continuing the color progression from the crescents, which ended with skein 9, but in the end decided that having a break in the color fade would provide a nice visual break.  I decided to work an I-cord edging around the entire shawl, but I couldn’t do it all in one go and I had to figure out how to pick up the stitches the right way so that the right side was facing me when I started working the I-cord.  For the short section at the top of the triangle I just pulled out a fair bit of yarn, picked up the stitches with the right side facing, then went to the other end of the cable and worked the I-cord with the right side facing me.  For the rest of the edging, which was done in one piece I worked from both ends of the cake, picking up stitches as I needed them.  It worked very well, and avoided the problem of having a lot of stitches on the needles at once.  I worked extra rows of I-cord to turn the corners.
I really love how the shawl turned out.

Omega Shawl - Finished!

After I finished up my test knit I concentrated on this shawl again.  I had finished up the body and cast on for the edging.  I had to rip it out and start over again because I had forgotten to count the stitches after the pick up to determine how many repeats I could do, and how many plain rows at the beginning and end I needed to do.  Once I got started again it actually went very quickly.  I like how the yellow changed the expression of the colors in the body of the shawl, drawing out the yellow and playing down the green.

Joy to the World - Cast On!

Last year I went a bit nuts on Advent Calendars and I bought one from Biscotte & Cie, a French Canadian Yarn Company.  At the end of July I was looking for another mindless project so I pulled it out and opened all of the drawers.  There were two patterns, a sock pattern and a shawl pattern.  The shawl pattern is a simple one, but the main color was white mohair, and I don’t do mohair, so I laid out all of the mini skeins and looked for something in my stash that would work.

These are the ten mini skeins.  I had two different colors to pick from, the Teal above and the orange/rust color in the picture below.  I went with the Teal.

Omega Shawl - Body Finished, Border Started

With the return to office three days a week I had to have a simple project for work knitting so I took this one and quickly finished up the body.  It then sat around with the border skein until last night.  I had finished up a clue on my test knit and it was too dark to take a photo and I needed something to knit so I grabbed this and started the border.  Unfortunately it was too dark to get a picture of the body before I started and I hadn’t taken one before.

Arrowhead Shawl - June, July & August Done!

With my left elbow feeling better I have been able to catch up on some other things as well.  This project took a back seat to a couple of other things (Camp Loopy, chiefly).  I had finished up June but never took a picture of it and never posted about it.  Last week I quickly knit up July and August.  The colors so far:

January - Modern fair isle
February- Tiny House
March - Manatee
April - Birkenstick
May - Coffee Grounds
June - Cold Drip
July - Rye Bourbon
August - Brick Dust

Tristan - Finished!

It has been a while.  I did finish my August Camp Loopy project with a couple of days to spare, but I wasn’t sure that I was going to make it.  After more than a year of working from home, I started going back into the office a couple of days a week on June 22 and the keyboard that I left there is not a good one and using it, even for a few days a week, gave me a repetitive stress injury in my left elbow, which was aggravated by knitting.  So I had to take some time off from knitting and when I did knit I limited the duration of my knitting sessions.  Thankfully with Delta we are not required to go in to the office anymore so my elbow has recovered.  I also have an ergonomic keyboard and a track ball for when I have to go back.  To complicate knitting matters I also had a test knit start up at the end of July competing for my limited knitting time.

The pattern called for a ribbed border by I didn’t want to knit the ribbing.  It pulls in the rest of the shrug and foils the drape so I replaced it with a simple lace pattern (yo, k2tog) and used a contrast color - Safran.

Tristan - Cast On

I finally cast on for the August Camp Loopy project this past week.  The theme this month is “Showstopper”.  I had a terrible time settling on a pattern.  I was going to make “Leaf Lettuce” by Ursa Major Knits, but changed my mind.  I spent several evenings perusing Ravelry without finding anything that really grabbed me, until I decided to look up the yarn I had bought - Rohrspatz & Wollmeise Pure (colorway Tristan) on Ravelry and look at the pattern ideas.  The pattern I ended up settling on is “Conic” by Cookie A.  I have several of her books and have been in several of her sock clubs, but she vanished from the knitting scene back in 2016 and I don’t think we’ve heard from her since.  The pattern is not without its errors, starting with the mismatch between US needle size and the metric equivalent - I went with the metric equivalent.  Then when I tried the first row of the cable pattern the chart was two stitches short.  I ended up charting the entire back with the decreases, the straight section and the increases (the pattern only had the decreases charted).  The chart is simple, so you could work it without everything, but why make yourself keep track of extra stuff?

When I restarted I cast on 68 stitches and purled one row.  The pattern had you cast on 58 stitches, and do a set up row where you increased to 68 stitches by working several purl-front-back-front stitches.  I didn’t much care for that, and figured picking up stitches for the ribbing at the end would be easier if I just cast on all of the stitches at the start.

Claude the Octopus - Finished!

I finally finished up Claude the Octopus.  All I had left to do were the eyes, and they were incredibly simple to work up, although stuffing them and sewing them to the head were a little bit challenging.  Getting the backs on to the safety eyes wasn’t easy either.  Getting the tension right on the tentacles was the most challenging part, and I was not entirely successful.  There are gaps in the crochet that you can see the stuffing through.  But not bad for my first attempt at Amigurumi.  He now hangs out on top of a lamp in our living room, keeping a sharp eye on things.

Stellar Fade - Skein 20

My knitting mojo has been a little low lately.  I was looking through my WIPs and decided to pull this one out.  I finished knitting with Skein 20 of my Mad Scientist 2020 Advent Calendar, and have Skein 19 set to go.  Skein 20 was inspired by the star Trappist-1in the constellation of Aquarius.

And here is the card that goes with it.
I have already ordered my Mad Scientist 2021 Advent Calendar.

Cheri Chevron - Finished!

I actually finished up this shawl a week ago yesterday, on July 16.  This is my July Camp Loopy Project.  The requirement was stripes, and 600 yards.  I used 193 grams and 688 yards.  Blocking was relatively straight forward.

Sherbet Fizz - Finished!

So I wasn’t completely monogamous in my knitting on the Cheri Chevron Shawl. I finished up this shawl on July 5 over the long weekend.  I like the colors.  It is a bit on the smaller side, but that is what happens with only a single skein.  It was a fun knit.  Blocking wasn’t too hard.

Cheri Chevron - Half Way Point

I reached the half way point back on July 10.  I actually finished up the shawl last night.  From cast on to finished shawl in 14 days.  Amazing what monogamous knitting can accomplish.  I used a total of 194.4 grams.  I forgot to weight my skeins before I started knitting, so I had to weigh the shawl after I cast off to determine how much yarn I used and make sure that I had met the yardage requirements for the July Camp Loopy project.  I used 688 yards, so I easily made the requirement.

Cheri Chevron - Cast On!

It is July, which means there is another Camp Loopy project to cast on.  The theme this month is stripes, so I’m knitting the Cheri Chevron Shawl by Ambah O’Brien.  I’ve actually made a fair bit of progress since this photo was taken.  The yarn is Dream in Color Smooshy with Cashmere - positively Dreamy to knit with - in Gold Experience and Summer Sunrise.

Sherbet Fizz - Cast On

Last month Ambah O’Brien released a new pattern - Sherbet Fizz.  This is a fun, easy knit.  Garter stitch and the simple lace pattern that she used in the Caladenia Shawl.  I have some Knit Circus yarn cakes in my stash so I grabbed one of those.  I did make a couple of modifications to the shawl.  I can on 7 stitches instead of 6 and I mirrored the chart to make it symmetric.  As written, one side always has 1 less stitch than the other side.  I have done this on other Ambah patterns.  I honestly do not know why she does this when making it symmetric is so easy.

Omega Shawl - Cast On

On June 21 I started going back into the office.  Actually, I started going back in on June 22.  I have to work in the office three days a week now.  Originally I was going to do Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but I changed my days to Monday, Tuesday and Friday.  I don’t like being away from Jasmine, my 21 year old cat too many days in a row.  Working from home has been great from so many perspectives, but especially being able to look after Jasmine.  She had a pretty severe stroke a year ago and we didn’t think she would make it, but she did, and she is still going.  She hasn’t given up on life, so we haven’t given up on her.

Anyway, heading back in to the office meant that I needed a stupidly simple knit for my work bag.  This is the last skein of the Alcidina yarn in my stash, so it is fitting that this colorway is called Omega.  This is just a simple garter stitch boomerang shawl.  I am enjoying the colors.  I still need to decide on a border color, but there is plenty of time for that.
